## An invitation to look at what you have been calling love and discover that perhaps it never was

Have you stopped to think that the love you practice, that you offer, that you seek, that you receive, is not what you think it is?

What we call love is, in most cases, a disguised transaction. It is the ego seeking security, seeking to complete itself through another, seeking proof that it exists, that it matters, that it is not alone.

It is not accusation. It is simply the recognition of a mechanism that works silently, that sustains your entire emotional life without you seeing it directly.

## What is true Love?

When A Course in Miracles speaks of true Love, Love with a capital L, it is not talking about feelings. It is not talking about that warmth in your chest or that emotional connection you experience with someone. It is talking about something radically different: a state of being that is the natural extension of who you are.

True Love, God’s Love, has characteristics that make it unrecognizable to the mind that lives in separation:

### It is total, without exclusions

He does not love some and reject others. He has favorites. He does not look at one person and say “you deserve my love” and at another “you do not”. True Love makes exceptions because it sees differences. It sees Unity where the ego sees fragments

### It extends without limit

It is not depleted, it is not divided, it is not weakened by being shared. If that Love flows through you, it flows simultaneously to everyone. It is not a scarce resource that must be rationed. It is infinite because its nature is eternal extension.

### It seeks nothing in return

It has hidden agenda. It does not love to obtain, to secure, to control, or to be remembered. True Love is given because that is its nature, not because it expects something in return. There is transaction, debt, obligation.

### Recognize absolute equality

It does not value some more than others. It does not compare, it does not rank, it does not decide that certain beings are more worthy of love than others. In true Love, all beings are equally valuable, equally loved, equally part of the Oneness.

### It is the reality of who you are

It is not something you do or practice. It is who you are when you stop defending yourself, when you stop building walls, when you stop believing that you are separate. Love is not a virtue you cultivate; it is your nature when guilt and fear disappear.

This is so different from what we experience as ‘love’ that it almost seems we are talking about different things. And it is because it is so. What you have called love is an imitation of the ego, a shadow projected on the wall.

## The limitations of ego-based human love

This is where it hurts to look, because this is where you see your own life reflected.

The love the ego offers is born of lack. It is born of the belief that you are incomplete, that you are missing something, that you need another to be whole. That need is the engine of everything you call love.

Think about it: why do you love someone? Because that person completes what you lack? Because they make you feel less alone? Because they validate you, see you, confirm that you exist? That is not love. That is hunger disguised as tenderness.

Ego love has these characteristics:

### It is selective and exclusive

You love some and not others. Your love has boundaries. There are people to whom you open your heart and people to whom you close it. This is not accidental; it is the very structure of ego love. It needs to create differences to justify why you love some and reject others.

### It comes with invisible conditions

You say you love unconditionally, but observe honestly: what happens when that person does not behave as you expect? What happens when they don't give you what you need? What happens when they disappoint you? Love withdraws, it cools, it turns into resentment. That means there were always conditions. You just didn't name them.

### Seeks to obtain, not to give

Even if you think you are giving, if your love comes from the ego, you are actually looking to receive. You seek to be loved in return. You seek the other to complete you, validate you, save you from loneliness. Your love is a hook disguised as a gift.

### It requires sacrifice

Ego love always costs something. It costs your freedom, your time, your energy, your truth. You have to give up parts of yourself to maintain the relationship. You have to pretend, adapt, change. True Love never asks for sacrifice because there is nothing to sacrifice when you recognize that we are all one.

### Generates guilt and projection

**You might be interested** A Course in Miracles: stop reading it linearly

When you love from a place of lack, you inevitably project your guilt onto the other. If you don't feel loved, you blame the other for not loving you enough. If you feel lonely, you blame the other for not being present. The guilt you don't want to see in yourself, you place on the other.

### It maintains the illusion of separation

Every act of selective love reinforces the belief that you are separate, that there is ‘me’ and ‘you’, that some deserve love and others do not. Every time you love some and exclude others, you are voting for separation, you are saying ‘Unity is not real, difference is’.

### Ego love has a purpose, and it is not Love

Ego love is a defense system. It works to keep the separate self alive, to give it the illusion that it exists, that it matters, that it can find what it needs in another equally separate and needy being.

But here is the important thing: that system never works. It never gives you what it promises. Because what you are looking for is not in another. What you are looking for is Unity, it is true Love, it is the remembrance of what you are. And that cannot come from separation. It can only come from letting go of separation.

## **The contrast between both types of love**

So you can see the difference clearly, here is the contrast between love and Love:

| **Aspect** | **love** (ego) | **Love** (true) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Origin** | Lack, fear, need to be completed | Wholeness, truth of who you are |
| **Direction** | Inward (seeking to fill one's own void) | Outward (extending naturally) |
| **Selectivity** | Loves some, excludes others | Love everyone without exception |
| **Conditions** | It comes with invisible expectations | Unconditional, agenda |
| **Cost** | It requires sacrifice, renunciation, pretense | It costs nothing because there is separation |
| **Duration** | Fluctuates according to circumstances | Eternal, immutable |
| **Effect** | It reinforces separation and guilt | Dissolve separation, heal guilt |
| **Motivation** | Obtain, secure, control | Give, extend, share |
| **Result** | More loneliness, more need, more pain | Peace, unity, freedom |

But here is what the ego doesn't want you to see: True Love is not a distant ideal. It is not something you must achieve in the future. It is what you are now, blocked only by your belief in separation.

True Love is not something you do. It is something you let flow when you remove the obstacles you have put in its way. Those obstacles are guilt, judgment, the belief that some deserve love and others do not.

## **Practical applications in three areas**

### 1. **In interpersonal relationships**

This is where it hurts the most because this is where you have invested your identity the most.

When someone is loved from the ego, what is really happening is that the relationship is being used to avoid looking at one's own loneliness. The other is being used as a mirror in which to reflect oneself, as proof that one exists, as a salvation from one's own emptiness.

#### What does this look like in practice?

**You might be interested** The ego's citadel and God's citadel in A Course in Miracles

That person needs to call, write, confirm that you matter to them. If they don't, it feels like abandonment. This means that the sense of existence depends on the actions of another. That is not love; it is dependence.

That person is expected to understand what is needed without you telling them. When they don't, you feel betrayed. That means you are projecting responsibility of your own well-being in another. That is not love; it is disguised manipulation.

You change who you are to maintain the relationship. You hide parts of yourself, pretend to have interests you don't, adapt your behavior. This means you don't trust being loved for who you really are. That is not love; it is negotiation.

#### What does true love look like in a relationship?

Love that person without needing them to love back. Not because one is a saint, but because one recognizes that the Love flowing through one does not depend on what she or he does or does not do.

In that person, you see the same thing you see in yourself: a Being seeking to awaken, who is scared, who is trying to find their way. And in that recognition, compassion is automatic, not forced.

That person is not expected to complete what is lacking, because it is recognized that nothing is lacking. One is complete. True Love comes from fullness, not from lack.

You love that person without sacrificing who you are. In fact, you love from who you really are, not from the mask the ego has built.

And here is what changes everything: when you Love like this, without exclusions, without conditions, without the need for return, the world around you begins to reflect that Love. Not because something has been done right, but because the blocking of what has always been there has ceased.

### 2. **In decisions and actions**

The ego makes decisions based on self-interest. It asks: “What benefits me? What protects me? What makes me feel better?”

**You might be interested** What is Love in A Course in Miracles and why you are afraid of it

That generates a world where everyone competes, where resources are scarce, where one's gain is another's loss. That is specialism in action.

When you make decisions from true Love, the question is different: “What serves Unity? What recognizes shared interests? What heals rather than attacks?”

This does not mean being a sacrificing martyr. It means recognizing that your well-being and the well-being of others are not separate. When you act from that recognition, decisions are made naturally, without internal conflict.

For example: someone asks you for help, but helping costs time and energy that is needed. The ego says: “I can’t, I need to take care of myself first.” True Love says: “I see that we both need something. I see that we are not really separate. How can I act from that recognition?”

Sometimes the answer is to help. Sometimes it is not to help. But the difference is that the decision comes from clarity, not from fear. It comes from truth, not from defense.

### 3. **In self-love**

This is where the ego has done its dirtiest work.

It has taught you that loving yourself means taking care of yourself, protecting yourself, ensuring your own survival. It means setting boundaries, saying no, prioritizing your own needs. And all of that sounds good until you look closely.

What happens when you love yourself from the ego? You constantly judge. There is a part that is always watching, evaluating, criticizing. “I am not good enough. I didn’t do enough. I should be different.”

That is not self-love. That is internal warfare.

True self-love is radically different. It doesn't mean you judge yourself less. It means you stop judging yourself completely.

It means you recognize that the guilt you feel is not real. That the mistakes you made do not define who you are. That the shame you carry does not belong to you.

It means you see in yourself what you should see in everyone: a Being doing the best they can with the level of understanding they have. A Being deserving of compassion, not punishment.

When you Love yourself like this, unconditionally, without judgment, something changes. The energy you spent defending yourself, criticizing yourself, punishing yourself, is released. And that energy flows naturally outward, towards others, because you recognize that there is separation between your own well-being and that of others.

## **The transformation process**

Seeing the difference between love and Love is one thing. Transforming how one loves is quite another.

It is not a process of “doing better”. It is not a process of effort, of practice, of trying to be more loving. That would be more of the same ego, just disguised as spirituality.

Transformation begins with a surrender. With admitting that what you have been calling love doesn't work. That the system you have built, that your entire emotional life is based on, has not brought peace. That you need to look differently.

### Step 1: Recognize the mechanism

Observe how you love. Not to judge yourself, but to see clearly. Do you love some and exclude others? Does love come with invisible conditions? Do you seek to get something in return? Do you sacrifice yourself and then expect to be recognized for it?

There is blame here. Only honest observation.

### Step 2: Look at the cost

What has this kind of love cost you? How much energy have you spent maintaining relationships that don't bring peace? How much guilt have you carried? How much loneliness have you felt even when you were surrounded by people you loved?

The ego wants you to keep believing that the cost is worth it. That if you just try harder, if you love more, if you sacrifice more, someday it will work out. But it doesn't work. It never has.

### Step 3: Open the door to another possibility

Ask for help. Ask for help from what A Course in Miracles calls the Holy Spirit, which is simply the part of the mind that remembers the truth.

You can say, “I don’t know how to love any other way. But I am willing to learn, to let go of what I think I know about love.”

That small willingness is all that is needed.

### Step 4: Practice forgiveness

Forgiveness is the method for releasing the guilt that blocks true Love. It is not forgiving others for what you believe they have done. It is recognizing that what you thought they did is not real. That the interpretation of their actions is a projection of your own guilt.

When you forgive like this, something is released. The defense lowers. The wall dissolves. And in that space, Love flows.

### Step 5: Observe how your perception changes

As you practice forgiveness, you begin to see people differently. You longer see them as enemies or allies. You see them as beings who, like you, are scared, who are searching, who are trying to find their way back home.

And in that recognition, compassion is automatic. Not out of your own virtue, but because you see the truth.

### Step 6: Let Love Flow

This is where you have to stop doing and just allow. Stop trying to love and just get out of the way. Let the Love that you are flow through you without controlling it, without directing it, without limiting it.

This doesn’t mean you are passive. It means you act from clarity, not from fear. You speak from truth, not from defense. You give without expecting return, because you recognize there is separation between giving and receiving.

## The Promise of Healing and Oneness

Here is what the ego doesn’t want you to know: when you stop loving from lack and start Loving from truth, your life doesn’t become less fulfilling. It becomes infinitely more fulfilling.

Not because you get more of what you want. But because you stop wanting what never satisfied.

When you Love without exclusions, without conditions, without the need for return, something happens. Loneliness disappears. Not because you Love, but because you recognize that you were never alone. That you were always part of the Oneness.

Guilt dissolves. Not because you have done something right, but because you recognize that guilt was never real. That it was just a belief the ego sold you.

Fear fades. Not because you have eliminated all threats, but because you recognize that there was never any real threat. That the only thing that scared you was your own projection.

And in that space of peace, of clarity, of Unity, Love flows naturally. Not as a feeling, but as the reality of who you are.

This is not an empty promise. It is the description of what happens when you stop blocking what has always been there. It is what happens when you finally stop fighting yourself and allow the truth to set you free.

## **The Silence After the Truth**

There is round conclusion here. There is satisfactory closure. Because Truth does not close anything. Truth opens.

What you have been calling love is not Love. It is an imitation, a shadow, a desperate attempt by the ego to find in another what can only be found in Oneness.

But here is what matters: that is not your fault. It is not a failure. It is simply how the ego works. And now that you see it, you have the option to choose otherwise.

Not tomorrow. Not when the time is most opportune. Now.

Because true Love does not wait. It has agenda. It does not need you to solve your problems first or to first make yourself worthy. It is here, now, waiting for you to simply stop blocking it.

What if, in this moment, you let go of the need to love the way the ego believes it needs to be loved? What if you recognized that you are already Loved, completely, unconditionally, by Unity itself?

What if you allowed that Love to flow through you to everyone, without exception, without limit, without expecting anything in return?

You don't have to answer. Just observe the question. Let it resonate. Let it make you uncomfortable. Let it open you.

Because in that space of discomfort, in that place where the ego begins to lose its strength, that is where true awakening begins.
